Shetland’s telecommunications infrastructure is set to be significantly enhanced with funding from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).
A grant of £367,500 will enable Shetland Islands Council to make a connection to the Faroese fibre optic cable which runs between Faroe, Shetland, Orkney and the Scottish mainland. Marvin Smith of the Council’s Telecoms Project team explained that the funding would allow the Council to move forward with the creation of a fibre optic network for Shetland. He added that the project was vital ‘to give Shetland a modern telecommunications structure and enable future broadband telecoms projects to materialise’.
