Open Exhibition Reveals Many Talents

Once a year, the Bonhoga Gallery in Weisdale, a partly-wooded valley north-west of Lerwick, hosts an open exhibition which any local artists and craftspeople can enter, reflecting a long tradition that began after the Second World War with the establishment of an annual arts and crafts exhibition.

This year’s Open features an extraordinary range of work, embracing painting, drawing, photography, jewellery, beadwork, textiles, ceramics, calligraphy, video, collage and assemblies of found objects. Finely worked portraiture and landscape photography of very special tonal quality sit alongside more abstract work. Most of those exhibiting are not from Shetland’s thriving community of established (and often professional) artists and makers but instead are simply pursuing their hobby on a smaller scale. In any event, the results are impressive.
