Recent figures from the Scottish Government confirm that people in rural areas tend to live longer, be better educated and think more highly of their surroundings.
Men in rural areas live, on average, about two and a half years longer than their urban cousins and women live for an additional year and a half. One other striking finding of the study is that whilst 29% of Scots engage in some kind of voluntary work, the figure in rural areas like Shetland is 47%. Across Scotland, the population has grown by 0.4% since 2001 but the increase in the countryside is between 4.7% and 8.4%, suggesting that more and more people find that rural areas offer a better balance of advantages.
