Webcasting Projects

We're glad you've made it this far!

And we hope that proves you've got more than a passing interest in the power of the Internet to put a small community like this on the map. For a few years now we've been broadcasting over the Net - something that is working well for us. We feel the time is right to develop it further, but we really  need the help of our creative community to come up with ideas.

People like you: amateurs and professionals who think they can bring some new notions to the table, have some fun and perhaps improve their own skills.  Shetland is full of talent and we'd like to bring some of it together through our webcasting projects.

So what do we mean by 'internet broadcasting'?

Our growing network of live webcams located across Shetland has become very popular with local people, our ex-pat community and visitors (before they arrive and when they get home).  They see Shetland as it really is - as we see it ourselves - on good and not so good days.  It's rare to have a communications channel spanning such a diverse group of people who all share the same passion: Shetland.  We're always looking for new locations so if you think you would like to join this camera network then send us a picture of the view from your location and we'll consider the best way to share it live on the Internet!

Our webcam network is complimented by our online radio station - 60 North FM.  We call it "The Authentic Sound of Shetland" and it provides a platform for the diverse musical talent with strong links to Shetland.  We introduce many aspects of our community to the aspiring visitor through professionally produced features and interviews with real people - Shetlanders and visitors. It's nothing other than good old-fashioned propaganda but it does maintain our core brand values - honesty and authenticity.

The decision's been taken for 2012  to focus more on video and audio programming and so we've have created an internet broadcast facility at the Hoswick Visitor Centre, located close to the 60N parallel!  With fibre optic technology decending on this community it just seemed the right thing to do and Sandwick is clearly a creative community in the making.  We hope to create an internet-based community radio facility that compliments the core visitor information radio service, and by doing so demonstrate that Shetland, as a progressive and creative community, can encourage others to visit, live, work, study or invest.

Probably the most public example of internet broadcasting has been our attempts to webcast the Lerwick Up Helly Aa. It's been extremely popular despite the low-budget feel! We've really only scraped the surface with the last two years providing valuable feedback from viewers and better understanding the challenges that this live event brings.

In January 2012 we'd like to make this even more professional and polished and for the webcast to become a community event too.  We need local talent to work with us - so if you think you have some of the skills listed below then please get in touch with one of the team.  New people bring new ideas and that's both welcome and exciting.

  • Voice talent
  • On-camera personality
  • Camera operator
  • Vision mixer
  • Presenter/Broadcaster
  • PC/Linux/Mac guru
  • Journalist/Researcher
  • Media Professional/Amateur/Student
